A book and a play

Here is my column from today regarding a book I recently read and a play I recently saw. As I say, it’s not intended to be a review of either,  just some thoughts and my hearty recommendation of both.

Glad to know you enjoyed both! Though I do love history, I've never been particularly drawn to the storyline. Maybe someday...

I read the book about three years before going to see the play, and while I loved most parts of the book, I do confess that there was a large section in the middle that I felt luke warm about and even skipped some pages. I would have given it top billing for 300 less pages.

Like you, the play was outstanding and I couldn't stand up fast enough. Not having seen Les Miserables, it is my top play now on which I will judge all others. I was worried about the rap and not being able to understand it and possibly if I knew nothing about Alexander Hamilton, I might not have grasped parts of it but I found I could follow right along and came away thinking Miranda is a genius. I've heard that he has taped an performance with the original cast with the plan to release it on DVD someday and I will definitely purchase a copy when that happens. As popular as it seems to still be, I may have to wait another few years until then.

I haven’t seen it yet, but I am currently drowning in Cherow’s massive biography of Grant. Good writing!

What a great review of both!
I haven't read the book (it's on my list) but have seen the musical and I loved it! I found the concept so very unique which made it quite exciting. It was very modern, for an old story, and I think it worked well. I found myself listening so hard because the pacing was very fast, so I'd love to see it again to see what I missed.

I have wanted to see Hamilton very badly. Your review confirms everythng that I have ever heard about it.

Merry Christmas to you and yours Bob!
